This is a very helpful book that dramatically improved my brother's college essays and the way he approached them. Very well structured and clearly written.
Do we really need another book about writing College Essays? Actually, yes we do because the majority of books deliver vague advice and present essay examples that lead to imitative efforts. However, this is not that type of book.
The Harvard Tutor's College Essay Handbook prompted me to search my classroom for listening devices (I didn't find any) as her advice sounded eerily familiar. Perhaps because we have had similar experiences with students who think they have nothing to say because they have had boring lives or the superstars who just want to brag about achievements rather than reveal something real and personal.
The book provides a direct set of steps to follow and is aimed at students who feel that writing is not their forte, as well as a section dedicated to non-native English speaking students. The instructions are easy to follow and helpful with suggestions for students who have followed the directions but are still feeling lost. To avoid overwhelming students, the length of the book is an unimposing 106 pages. However, those 106 pages are just what you need to know without a lot of fluff and filler. The information is provided succinctly, and then the reader is directed on what steps to take.
Overall, I absolutely recommend this book as a resource for all students writing American College Application essays. It will hold your hand and take you to the end with helpful advice and clear instructions.

As a parent who has been through the college application process with two children and will soon be going through it with a 3rd, I found this to be an extremely helpful companion tool to tackle the dreaded college essay. My kids procrastinated the essays because finding the "perfect topic" and constructing it all was stressful, to say the least. In the book, the author offers effective tips and questions to answer to guide the student in selecting the topic/main point and clear sub-points to tie the essay together. She also helps with questions we struggled with-- how to create a strong 1st sentence, what tone and language to use, how to write an effective conclusion, etc. Best of all, she really simplifies it so it isn't as daunting as it all first seems. There's also a section in the book devoted to the editing process-- who to ask and what instructions editors should they be given. Edits from others will be much more meaningful if you ask the right person and give them guidance. Who knew?!
There's a section in the book devoted to the "Why Us?" essay that I found extremely helpful. It guides a student through what admissions counselors are looking for and helps direct them on what information to gather in composing their essay. There is no doubt if you follow her prescription, you will stand out from the masses.
I never hired a professional to go through my kids' essays. We did it on our own and it was pretty painful because it was trial and error and lots of editing. The book will definitely be used with my 3rd. It's a comprehensive guide to writing an effective essay and is written in a way that is easy to understand while being rich in content. Best of all, it's not a novel-- you can easily read it and get started immediately.
