Samuel Smiles (23 December 1812 – 16 April 1904), was a Scottish author and government reformer who campaigned on a Chartist platform. His masterpiece, Self-Help (1859), has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism", and it raised Smiles to celebrity status almost overnight.

I came across this book (an original copy) in a used bookstore years ago. It is one of the best purchases I ever made. The sound advice, and the wonderful stories illustrating the value of thrift are so helpful, and I return to them again and again. The consumerist, material world that we live in makes it difficult to keep living a thrifty lifestyle. It seems that we are constantly swimming upstream in our efforts to live below our means in a society that does not value frugality, thrift, saving, or denying ourselves in any way. This book is a wise antidote to all the salespeople, the marketers, the advertising literally everywhere trying to entice you to spend your money rather than save it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in saving money, getting out of debt, and becoming a finer person.

Thrift Samuel Smiles 9781530279258 Books Reviews

Wonderful timeless advice for the young and old to apply in all areas in your life.
A great book to add to any library!
Thrift says it all. It was short and to the point. Kept it focused and didn't include meaningless content.
I love this, quite refreshing and comes with lots of practical wisdom! Though old, it is still relevant in this day and age.
For centuries, thrift has been a critical element of the lives of all peoples. Smiles' wise recommendations are as essential in this day as it was when he wrote this book.
Profound and inspiring- I have been highlighting all over this book. It shows principles that help combat the consumer mentality so prevalent today.
While this book may be a bit dated in its examples, it is worth the read. Smiles does an excellent job illustrating the many facets of thrift, drawing out its value personally, for the family and society. This would be an excellent primer for an older teen preparing for financial independence. Unfortunately the principles of thrift are not taught in school. A worthwhile read but takes a little persistence to get through the dated examples.
I have to recommend this book for everyone that is interesting in society and worry about what is going on nowadays in our society and the rest of the world as well. This is not a sociological book but explains the basics of any society that want to success. It is an educational book and should be study in each senior year of each school in America. In this book Smiles accomplish the hard task to connect economy with character values and make a case of this. How these two should be together. Examples of the failure of that connection in the modern world of today, are at sight. Greed plus bankruptcy.
